Family Nurse Practitioner or Physician Associate — Contract

Location: Orchid Health clinic locations, as assigned
Schedule: Part-time, flexible contract schedule, approximately 1–2 days per week / 8–16 hours per week
Primary point of contact: Clinical Leadership
Compensation: $85–$100 per hour, depending on experience
Contract type: Independent contractor, hourly, non-benefited

Contract Details

  • Contract type: Independent contractor, not an employee role.
  • Schedule: Approximately 1–2 days per week, or 8–16 hours per week, depending on coverage needs and provider availability.
  • Schedule flexibility is important. Short-notice availability is highly desirable.
  • This role will provide clinic and inbox coverage for primary care providers on leave, as well as same-day and acute care visits for Orchid patients.
  • Payment: Contractor will be paid hourly based on submitted and approved hours.
  • Expenses: Pre-approved travel or work-related expenses only.
  • Confidentiality: This role requires access to confidential patient information and protected health information. Confidentiality obligations apply during and after the engagement.
  • Documentation: Contractor is expected to complete clinical documentation, inbox follow-up, and patient care responsibilities in accordance with Orchid Health policies and clinical expectations.
  • Authority: Contractor does not have authority to enter into agreements on behalf of Orchid Health.

We are looking for a contracted Family Nurse Practitioner or Physician Associate who can help provide flexible clinical coverage across Orchid Health clinics, supporting continuity of care for patients and helping teams during provider leaves, vacations, and other coverage needs.

Contracted Role Summary

The contracted Family Nurse Practitioner or Physician Associate provides flexible primary care coverage for Orchid Health patients and care teams. This may include clinic coverage, inbox coverage, same-day visits, acute care, and coverage for providers who are out on vacation, PTO, or extended leave.

This role is a good fit for a clinically strong, adaptable provider who enjoys stepping into different settings, supporting patients and teams, and providing thoughtful, high-quality care with professionalism and warmth.

The provider will be expected to deliver comprehensive primary care, maintain accurate and timely documentation, respond to labs, imaging, referrals, and patient messages while scheduled, and support clinic teams with patient care needs during assigned coverage days.

  • Orchid patients receive high-quality, compassionate, and timely care during provider absences or coverage gaps.
  • PCP inboxes, labs, imaging, referrals, and patient messages are addressed appropriately on assigned coverage days.
  • Same-day and acute care visits are handled safely, professionally, and in alignment with Orchid’s clinical guidelines.
  • Patient charts are completed within expected timelines.
  • Clinic teams feel supported during provider leave, vacation, or unexpected coverage needs.
  • The provider communicates clearly with patients, staff, and leadership.
  • The provider models Orchid’s values through respectful, trauma-informed, patient-centered care.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care and Same-Day Coverage

  • Provide primary care, same-day, and acute care visits for Orchid Health patients.
  • Treat patients professionally, respectfully, and without judgment.
  • Practice empathy and use a trauma-informed approach in patient care.
  • Follow Orchid Health clinical guidelines and applicable policies, including policies related to controlled substances.
  • Be available for consultation and assistance with medical or mental health emergencies and referrals while working in the clinic.

Inbox and Provider Coverage

  • Provide inbox coverage for PCPs on assigned coverage days.
  • Respond to patient labs, imaging, referral results, messages, and cases within expected timelines while scheduled.
  • Support coverage for provider vacation/PTO, inbox needs, extended leave, and other short-term clinical coverage gaps.
  • Place orders and route follow-up appropriately in alignment with Orchid’s out-of-office coverage expectations.

Documentation and Follow-Through

  • Create and maintain thorough patient records, including history, physical findings, assessment, medical decision-making, and treatment plans.
  • Document prescription orders, diagnostic testing, referrals, and interpretation of results.
  • Maintain accurate problem lists and medication lists.
  • Complete patient charts within 24 hours of the patient visit.
  • Work to meet agreed-upon productivity and care expectations.

Teamwork and Communication

  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with patients, staff, providers, and leadership.
  • Maintain a calm and professional demeanor.
  • Support clinic teams by sharing coverage responsibilities as agreed upon.
  • Ask questions and communicate thoroughly to support safe, high-quality care.
  • Raise patient care concerns appropriately and professionally.

Qualifications

Required

  • Licensed to practice in the State of Oregon prior to beginning the contract.
  • Must be one of the following:
    • Family Nurse Practitioner
    • Physician Associate
  • Current DEA certification.
  • Current board certification and licensure appropriate to profession.
  • Experience providing primary care, urgent/same-day care, or outpatient family medicine.
  • Ability to provide safe, independent clinical care while also collaborating with clinic teams.
  • Strong documentation, follow-through, and patient communication skills.
  • Comfort working in an EHR and managing inbox-related clinical responsibilities.

Preferred

  • Experience in rural healthcare, community health, primary care, or family medicine.
  • Experience providing short-term, float, locums, or coverage-based clinical care.
  • Ability to work across different clinic environments and adapt quickly to team needs.
  • Short-notice availability.
